Central Bedfordshire College

Capita’s swift Disaster Recovery service minimises disruption following server failure

Central Bedfordshire College case study image

Central Bedfordshire College is a key provider of education and training in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Leighton Buzzard and Central Bedfordshire. It supports over 6,000 learners with around 1,500 studying full-time. The College prides itself on maintaining high standards and excellent, up-to-date facilities.

The background

Central Bedfordshire College has worked with Capita Further and Higher Education (FHE) for over five years. During this period, the relationship has continued to expand and now Capita’s UNIT-e information management software is recognised as the main system across the College with both staff and students having access to the system across the campuses.

The issue

The Disaster Recovery plan paid off in January 2010 when the College suffered a complete service failure. Unfortunately, this was during a critical period for the College with a key statutory statistical return due. Failure to meet this deadline could have had potentially adverse consequences for the College’s funding.

The solution

Capita immediately implemented the Disaster Recovery Plan. Their initial response was to have a replacement server delivered to the College. This arrived within five hours and an engineer was on-site shortly afterwards.

The engineer spent the afternoon and early evening restoring key data. All data needs were back and running by around 10pm that evening.
